Fatso and Me: A Love Story Rooted in Shade and Sentiment

Hydrangeas, Heucheras, and Hostas, oh my! If you've known me for any length of time, you know I have a soft spot for shade-loving plants — especially Hydrangeas. Their rich color, showy blooms, and endless varieties have always made them my go-to.
But recently, a new (well, old) love has been stealing the spotlight in my garden — the bold, tropical beauty of Fatsia Japonica.
My History with "Fatso"
We go way back — fourteen years, to be exact. My oldest daughter was eleven and starring as Dorothy in a local production of The Wizard of Oz — the iconic “Muny” version. Ever the enthusiastic stage mom, I was determined to create a set worthy of Broadway... or at least Suffolk, VA.
We partnered with a generous local nursery, Lancaster Farms, which donated plants for the “Haunted Forest.” One of them was this curious, lush, almost Jurassic-looking plant I’d never seen before: Fatsia Japonica.
"Fatso" (as I affectionately call her) played the role of psychedelic forest foliage in the production — and afterward, she took her final bow right into a corner of my backyard.

Fast Forward to Today
Now it’s 2025, and that once-tiny 5-gallon plant is a 6' x 6' evergreen showstopper. Her bold, glossy leaves have graced homecoming bouquets, flower arrangements, and countless vases over the years — a quiet, constant presence in our family story.
When we moved to Henrico, VA in 2023, one of my first missions (after getting the HOA blessing!) was to plant Fatsia Camouflage — a striking variegated version with green and chartreuse leaves I found at Strange’s Nursery in Short Pump, VA. I couldn’t resist.
Her leaves recently starred in a fall floral arrangement I gave to my grown-up “Dorothy” — now 25 — on her birthday. Full circle.

Why I Love Fatsia (and Why You Might Too)

Gracious Living Within Reach Tip:
Think beyond the vase. When you're planting your garden, think of how your greenery might someday appear in your home, your table settings, or your gift bouquets. That's beauty that lives with you — not just outside your window, but in your everyday life.
